2nd Hellboy Animated Feature Arrives on DVD

Starz Home Ent. has released the latest HELLBOY animated feature, HELLBOY ANIMATED: BLOOD & IRON. This DVD sells for $19.98.

In this new adventure, Hellboy must choose between the destiny he accepted - the protection of mankind - and the destiny for which he was created - the destruction of mankind. In 1939, the young Professor Broom destroyed the vampire Erzsebet Ondrusko. Now, decades later, it seems that someone is trying to bring her back and Professor Broom (Hurt) wants to investigate this worrisome development himself.

Brainwashed!: Animated Soviet & U.S. Propaganda From The Cold War

Begins: June 15, 2007

ASIAF-San Francisco is hosting the screening, "Brainwashed," filled with animated Soviet and U.S. propaganda films. Program will be introduced by Karl Cohen. This selection will include a few of the highlights of the DVD set, ANIMATED SOVIET PROPAGANDA: FROM THE OCTOBER REVOLUTION TO PERESTROIKA, and American propaganda produced by John Sutherland Prods. in Hollywood.

Beginning at 7:30 pm, the screening will take place at The Exploratorium's McBean Theater. It is free and the public invited. For more details, e-mail president@asifa-sf.org.

HBO Acquires First 3D Series on African Culture

Home Box Office (HBO) acquired MAGIC CELLAR, the first animated series to be based on African culture, for broadcast in the United States. This acquisition of an African animated television program is a first, thereby making HBO's move a historic sale. The multi-award winning 3D animated series is based on 20 folk tales, including interviews with elders from villages in Africa.

MAGIC CELLAR will be shown on HBO Family in the U.S. and Bermuda. The first episode premieres Saturday, June 23. Each episode will first air Saturday and repeat on Thursday.

Russia's First Animated Cartoon TV Channel Starts Broadcasting

In April, the first 24/7 animated cartoon TV channel "2o2" has started broadcasting in Russia, reports russia-ic.com.The new 2o2 is airing cartoons from England, France, Italy, Czechia and Japan, but the majority of air-time is given to American animated cartoons. Russian films comprise two hours per day.Targeted at an audience, 11-34, the site reports that about $15 million will be spent on the TV channel's content and promotion this year.

BET Adds Three Toons to Lineup

At the up-front presentation of its fall 2007 lineup, BET announced the addition of three new animated TV series to the most ambitious slate of programming in its 26-year history.

Orlando Jones (MAD TV) and Ali LeRoi (EVERYBODY HATES CHRIS) have teamed up to create BUFU, an animated sketch comedy show in the tradition of SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE and SCTV. BUFU will premiere in fall 2007.

Transformers Animated Feature Returns to Theaters in U.K.

U.K. distribution firm Metrodome Distribution is set to re-release the 1986 animated feature TRANSFORMERS: THE MOVIE, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. The film will make a two-week run in one theater in London's West End starting May 4, 2007. Metrodome hopes to capitalize on the buzz leading up to the theatrical release of Michael Bay's live-action TRANSFORMERS feature in July. Metrodome will also release a two-disc, remastered widescreen edition of the animated feature on DVD June 4.

The 14th annual festival is now accepting entries for the 2007 festival. Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo Wins at Japanese Academy Awards

In a ceremony that took place in Tokyo on Feb. 16, 2007, Madhouse Studios' TOKI WO KAKERU SHOUJO (THE GIRL WHO LEAPT THROUGH TIME) took home best animated film at the 30th Japanese Academy Awards. Happy Feet & Danish Poet Top Animated Oscar Honors

The Oscar animation winners offered a few surprises as the top animation awards went to HAPPY FEET for Best Animated Feature and the indie 2D short THE DANISH POET (NFB) by Torill Kove won for Best Animated Short tonight (Feb. 25, 2007) during the 79th Annual Academy Awards at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood.

Echoing its earlier awards at the VES Awards, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MANS CHEST scored the big win for Best Visual Effects. Taking the stage to accept from ILM were John Knoll, Hal Hickel, Charles Gibson and Allen Hall.
