2002 – 2003 Primetime Emmy Awards Nominations

Nominations for the 55th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards were announced on July 17, 2003 and Nickelodeon won the most primetime Emmy nominations for animated shows with four, narrowly edging out FOX with three. THE SIMPSONS and FUTURAMA were again nominated for Outstanding Animated Program (For Programming Less Than One Hour) along with Nick's AS TOLD BY GINGER and SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS, while DISNEY'S KIM POSSIBLE on the Disney Channel rounded out the category.

Kulkarni Elected to International Television Academy Board

JadooWorks Animation Studios coo Ashish Kulkarni has been elected to the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences as an associate member. He was elected by a majority vote from the full board of directors of the Television Academy to serve a two-year term. In his role representing animation, he will help to organize Academy activities, such as judgings and panels, and will participate in the various sub-committees.

MTV's newest animated series, SPIDER-MAN premiered on Friday, July 11, 2003 at 10:00 pm, produced by Sony Pictures Television in association with Adelaide Prods. Mainframe Entertainment engineered and executed for Sony a new 3D production method to give the characters a somewhat flattened 2D look with three-dimensional dynamics of a film.

Last Call for Entries In Barcelona International TV Festival

The Barcelona International Television Festival 2003 (Childrens Television Festival) has extended its deadline to June 20, 2003. The Barcelona International Television Festival is devoted to childrens television programs with awards for both national and international productions that showcase ethical and humanitarian values. The festival is seeking live-action and animated shorts, 60 minutes in length or less. Works must have been completed after January 1, 1999. Non-selected works will still be presented during the Festival in the Video A La Carte section. Other sections include: The Other Childhood, dedicated to programs that picture the human condition of children in developing nations; and Surprises, featuring the production of thematic channels, broadcasters, producers and festivals who work in the area of childrens television. Tripping the Rift Gets Hollywood Voices

Web short turned TV series TRIPPING THE RIFT has announced the Hollywood talent who have signed on to lend their voice to SCI FI Channel's first original animated TV series. Gina Gershon (BOUND), Stephen Root (NEWS RADIO) and "Stuttering" John Melendez (THE HOWARD STERN SHOW) head the ensemble cast. The half-hour 3D show is being produced by CinéGroupe, in association with Film Roman. The show is set to debut in January 2004.

Lisa Gregorian has been promoted from sr vp of marketing and research at Warner Bros. International Television Distribution to sr vp, Television, Warner Bros. Marketing Services. In her new position she will continue to oversee all marketing for WBITD and will take on marketing for WB Television (network television production) and WB Animation. She reports to Bruce Rosenblum, exec vp at Warner Bros. Television Group and will work closely with Jeffrey Schlesinger, president of WBITD, WB Television president Peter Roth and WB Animation president Sander Schwartz.

Students from New York University and Pasadena's Art Center School of Design took first place for animation in the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Foundation's 24th Annual College Television Awards Competition. The winners, along with students in live-action categories, were flown in from all across the country to be honored at a special awards gala on March 16, 2003 at the St. Regis Hotel in Los Angeles, during which they had the opportunity to meet with industry leaders at the invitation-only ceremony.

Mischel Moves Up To Mainframe

Former Harvey head Rick Mischel takes the reigns as CEO of Mainframe Entertainment, the pioneering computer animation studio in Canada. He replaces Brett Gannon, who stepped down as president in October 2002 for medical reasons. Mischel will be based at the company's headquarters in Vancouver, overseeing production, development, distribution, licensing, operations and business affairs. "We are looking to Rick to expand our computer graphics animation expertise beyond television and into new areas such as feature films.

Abandon has teamed with Creek & River to gain direct access to unique and untapped Japanese properties across television, comic books, anime and games. Mainframe Lands At NATPE With Two New Properties

Vancouver-based computer animation studio Mainframe Entertainment, Inc. is bringing two new animated projects to this year's NATPE: ALIEN LEGION and MAXINE 5. ALIEN LEGION, based on the cult comic book series created by Carl Potts, follows the futuristic exploits of the Legion's Force Nomad and its multi-species ranks of alien legionnaires. Culled from the unwanted of three galaxies, legionnaires are the expendable shock troops and peacekeepers of the new intergalactic realm.

Mr. Bean Hits Scandinavia

The animated adventures of MR. BEAN is heading to Scandinavia. The 26 x 30-minute series has been sold to SVT, Sweden and YLE, Finland by Fremantle International Distribution, which distributes both the original live-action series and the animated series. SVT will start to broadcast the series on December 23, 2002 and it will run through early February. The series launch date on YLE is still to be announced. MR.

Animation Collective Goes To The Sewers For New Turtles Website

Animation Collective will collaborate with Mirage and 4Kids Entertainment to create the online programming component to the new TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES television series. Although the exact plans for the site are a closely guarded secret, Animation C ollective promises a site that will allow visitors to experience the Turtle's subterranean lair, learn more about the characters and check out sneak previews.
