The Career Navigator: New Year, New You

Pamela Kleibrink Thompson suggests that every day is an opportunity to reinvent yourself.

Reinvent yourself regularly.
- Peter Guber, chairman and CEO, Mandalay Entertainment Group, quoted in Tribe of Mentors by Timothy Ferriss

The beginning of the year often inspires us to make a fresh start. Gym memberships rise in January as many resolve to lose weight or set goals to get in shape.  Others make vision boards and write down goals.

But every day offers a new beginning and an opportunity for a fresh start-not just the start of the year.

A change of place gives you a fresh start. On my first day in the cafeteria at college, someone asked me my name and I realized I had an opportunity to completely change, including my name, if I wanted to, since no one knew me at that school.

Whenever I moved to a new place, I had a similar opportunity to reinvent myself. Whenever I changed jobs. a whole new set of people gave me a chance to reinvent myself.

Last week, I saw a sign at the mall that said, “New Year. New You.” They were advocating a new fashion -- a new look. But what if you could take a new look at the world…change your perspective, your outlook, your attitude?

Reinvent yourself. What would you change? You can change the world. You can change your world. What if you let go of fear for the year? What would you do? Who would you meet? Where would you go? What would you try?

What new habit or skill would you develop? Give yourself permission to try something new.

Remove the reins you have put upon yourself and let yourself gallop at full speed. Don’t hold back.

Some people need encouragement and some nudging to reinvent themselves. When one of my clients showed me his portfolio, I helped him recognize his strength in character design and told him about job openings in that area. Not long after that, with lots of dedicated hard work and persistence on his part, my client reinvented himself, transitioning from an art director in advertising to a character designer for television animation.

What if you looked at yourself differently? Give yourself a fresh start. Every day is full of infinite possibility, just like you.
