Matita Animated Film Festival

The Matita Film Festival (MFF) is an animation festival consisting of two competitive sections open to authors from all over the globe, plus various historical and monographic retrospectives. MFF's goal is to highlight the independent spirit, while not neglecting entertainment issues. MFF 2001 will feature various retrospectives including Raoul Servais (Belgium), Ursula Ferrara (Italy) and Polish animation. Moreover, MFF holds a strong interest in the productions of animated film schools from all over the world.

The 2nd Calgary International Film Festival (CIFF)

The 2nd Calgary International Film Festival (CIFF) highlights films from Canada and around the globe. The festival will hand out such awards as audience favorite; best jury picked short; best jury picked feature; and best jury picked documentary. There are no entry fees or handling fees for this year's festival.

Giant Screen Theater Association 2001 Conference & Trade Show

The six-day conference will debut the results of the GSTA recently released Economic Impact Study, a comprehensive examination of the quantitative and qualitative factors that affect how large format films are produced, distributed and exhibited. The conference will also feature up to 12 new giant screen films and 4 short films and will introduce a nightly "wrap party" for attendees to network and expound on the events of the day.

The Woodstock Film Festival

The Woodstock Film Festival (WFF) is accepting entries for its 2001 edition. Maverick awards and prizes are presented in the following categories: feature, documentary, short, animation and student film. Bill Plympton will curate and present a special award for Best Animated Film. Send preview tapes on VHS (NTSC only) with a completed entry form. Entry fees range from $25-$50. The WFF is also looking for exceptional HDTV and interactive media to showcase during the festival. There are no entry fees for HDTV and interactive material but entry forms should be included with screeners.

The 12th Cartoon Forum

Cartoon Forum is the annual European animation co-financing event, organized by Cartoon Media, the European animation union. The organizers have chosen 84 television projects and 5 Web projects eligible for funding consideration. In addition, the annual Cartoon d'Or prize will be given during the closing session. Five European films will be chosen as candidates based on their award-winning performances at selected European animation festivals. The money given is to finance a new film, suitable for television.

The Third WinFemme Film Festival

The Third WinFemme Film Festival celebrates films, videos and screenplays that feature female protagonists. The Women's Image Network (WIN) organizes the event. From WinFemme 1999 and 2000, five films were sold to Sundance and Showtime and several films have won both Oscar and Independent Spirit nods. Twenty films will be features in a "Best Of The Fest" screening, which traveled to six other major U.S. cities last year.

The New York Animation Festival

The New York Animation Festival is a biennial international festival of film, video and digital animation. The 2001 festival will focus on independently produced short works. New to this year's festival will be panel discussions on topics such as creating animation for TV and the Web, creating animation for wireless devices, syndicating animation on the Web and digital animation tools. The New York Animation Festival is a project of Perimeter Media + Culture Projects, a non-profit cultural organization in New York City.

Convergence Film/Video/Animation Festival

The Convergence Film/Video/Animation Festival, part of the Convergence International Arts Festival, is seeking shorts, 60 minutes in length or less. Live-action and animated works in all genres are accepted in categories of documentary, narrative and experimental. Works can originate in any format but must be available for festival screening in either Beta or 35mm and must have been completed after January 1999. The entry fee is $15.00. Cash awards for "Best of Show" are $1,000.

Launched in 1998, the show was founded by KidScreen magazine in partnership with seven leading industry ad agencies: Foote, Cone & Belding; Grey Advertising; Griffin Bacal; J. Walter Thompson; Leo Burnett; Ogilvy & Mather; Saatchi & Saatchi; Young & Rubicam; and YTV Canada Inc. 2001 sponsors include: Boards Magazine, Nelvana Enterprises and YTV. A team of judges will judge entries in 32 categories. In conjunction with the awards there will be the Advertising & Promoting to Kids conference.

RESFEST Digital Film Festival

The RESFEST Digital Film Festival promotes innovative films from independent filmmakers, empowered by the use of digital production tools. Krok International Animation Film Festival

The Krok International Animation Film Festival is an international cinema event that travels down the Dnieper River to the Black Sea. Starting in Kiev, the luxury liner makes stops in Odessa, Sevastopol and Yalta. The festival screens films that were created after May 1, 1999. 5th Seoul International Cartoon & Animation Festival - SICAF 2001

Established in 1995, the Seoul International Cartoon & Animation Festival (SICAF) became biennial in 1999. In addition to the official competition, the festival features screenings, exhibitions and special events such as the SICAF Project Promotion, where investors, producers and distributors will be able to meet to discuss co-productions. Categories for competition include: features, shorts, TV/video specials, TV/video series, commercials, music videos, TV idents, pilots, students and graduation films and Internet animation. Cash prizes range from $1,500 to $6,000 (Grand Prize).

Imagine-Nation Expo, A Stop-Motion Convention

It is launched to bring together established filmmakers, emerging talent and their audiences on the studio backlot - just North of Hollywood. The Arts Alliance Center at Clear Lake and The SAIC Digital Arts Lab is hosting the 3rd Annual International Science & Technology Digital Art Competition. Science submission themes should reflect subjects related to the sciences, i.e., physics, biology, paleontology, astronomy, geology, etc. Technology submissions should reflect subjects related to engineering, i.e., structures, vehicles, computers, industrial design, etc. Animations should be submitted in .mov format, with a pixel size of 320 x 240, on disk or 1/2" NTSC videotape.

The event will hand out honors to those who impacted the world of licensing in the past year. Some of the awards include License of the Year, Merit Award for Licensing Creativity and Best Brand. TERRES EN VUES/LAND InSIGHTS, an association created to promote native culture, is presenting the 11th Edition of the Montreal First Peoples' Festival. The event highlights films made by American natives and about native issues and topics. Selected films and videos will be in competition, unless the filmmaker wishes them to be screened only. Awards will be given on June 17, during a special event. To be eligible for competition, the work must have been produced no more than 3 years before the festival.
