Is MAYA the end all-be all?

Just a question for you guys:
Can you produce a final product animated piece in MAYA alone? With sound and everything? Is it true even South Park is done in Maya?

Thanks!

south park is not made with maya. shows like that use software similar to adobe after effects and flash.
sound can be used with maya, but i would not recommend it.
maya is primarily a tool for three dimensional computer animation and variations on it.

Yes it is.

And macleod, you will want to get a seperate sound editing/mixing program, like Pro Tools or Vegas. And I personally recommend a package for putting together rendered files as well. I prefer to render individual frames and assemble them After Effects or FCP.

That's good, because I already record music in Logic.. so the sound thing would be easy enough. So you can input all of your frames separately into Final Cut Pro to make your true "cartoon"? What good would an animation program be then, if you could just scan your stuff into photoshop then place it into FCP? Thanks for your help!

I think it's going to be important at this point for you to describe to us exactly what you are trying to do. As fuzz pointed out, Maya is primarily a 3d program. And while they do use it to create South Park, you would not normally use Maya for 2d, and you certainly wouldn't use it as an ink&paint program, which is what it sounds like you want.

What kind of animation are you trying to produce?

Yes south park is indeed done in maya (or at least one time it was), to quote a south park animator, "its like using a bulldozer to make a snow man". A co-worker of mine also did a very nice 2d cut out short ("Out of Beat") in maya, you can see it at http://www.andrealira.com.

As a maya user I can firmly say that maya is NOT the be all end all program. There are many programs that do pretty much the same thing as maya, and some things better (3dmax, xsi). And at the very least you still need other apps to edit and composite your animations.

I'm really looking for a program to do computer based 2D animation, maybe with some 3D elements combined. Definitely more for the purpose of creating a watchable "show", than a Flash type internet program. Any suggestions? toonboom?

have you looked at Little Bill cartoons or even Blues clues?
they also have the 3D effect but it's more like 2D
they use Illustrator and After effects.

there are many combinations to do it.

Have you ever watch the Bitey of Brackenwood films, they were totally made in Flash.

I find them very watchable, as opposed to SouthPark.

Oh and by the way he worked for Disney in special effects for a while. I find his characters, backgrounds and animation well defined, and he uses that misunderstood and much maligned program Flash.

Here's a link to all of his animations on the net, you might be surprised at the power of flash, it's not just for stick men and puppets.
