Best value for a SIGGRAPH newbie?

Hi everyone!

I'm an animation student in Orange County, and I'd love to go to the SIGGRAPH convention for the first time this year in August. I've got a few more years to go before I graduate (still in the basic classes), so I'm not really going to show a portfolio there (I need more work in it first), I just want to maybe see some of the new technology and sit in on some of the animator's talks, especially concerning character animation. My question is, has anyone gone before, and what should I be sure to see? I have a reeeally meager budget at the moment, so what pass would you recommend a starving college student buy and be able to see some helpful things?

I usually get the "Exhibits Plus" pass. It gets you into several major panel discussions as well as the show floor, and is much less expensive than a full show pass (haven't ever had one of those unless my employer was paying...). The last time I went I saw a keynote by Lucas and a panel that included Glen Keane.

Check the SIGGRAPH website to see what panels are included in Exhibits Plus.

Not sure if it's in your budget, but check out AutoDesk's Masterclasses. It's part of the event, but isn't put on by SIGGRAPH. I really enjoyed the rigging one I went to 2 years ago. Siggraph-wise, I went for the whole package because I thought I'd only go once. Probably could have made do with the Exhibits plus.
