100-Second Short Celebrates 100 Years of Brazilian Animation

Creative studios Lobo and VetorZero reimagine iconic snippets from country’s most popular animated works for Annecy Festival showcase.

In celebration of 100 years of outstanding Brazilian animation, creative design studios Lobo/VetorZero harken to Brazil’s colorful past and innovative future with the short video Brazil Frame by Frame – 100 Years of Brazilian Animation for the Annecy International Animated Film Festival. This year, the festival honored Brazil with its guest country spotlight, curating a host of special programs focusing on Brazilian animation, music and art.

The 100-second video, helmed by directing duo Alton (Felipe Machado and Tiago Marcondes), reimagines some of Brazil’s most celebrated animated work, from the first Brazilian short film O Kaiser, created in 1917, and the 1929 Macaco Feio, Macaco Bonito, to the more recent fan-beloved and Oscar-nominated The Boy and the World, among others. The vibrant short cuts together iconic moments in Brazil’s storied animation history, weaving 100 years-worth of styles and techniques, breathing fresh life into some of the most beloved characters and moments in a delightful homage to the industry’s centennial. The film was part of an activation created by Agency F/Nazca Saatchi & Saatchi that featured outdoor and digital components and 10 documentary shorts. The short was produced by Alberto Lopes and Sérgio Salles.

Choosing the short films to be featured in the project was no easy feat, and Alton selected the artists to best represent the animation community out of hundreds of Brazil’s creative greats.  Noted Alton, “This project was only possible thanks to the work of several talented illustrators, who recreated some animations that were lost in time,” including Piconzé, created by the author of colored animated feature films in Brazil, Ypê Nakashima.

Considered among the highest-regarded animation film festivals, the Annecy International Animation Film Festival showcases the best of cartoon films over various mediums in categories including features, shorts, television and advertising, student and internet works. The festival took place in Annecy, France from June 11, 2018 to June 16, 2018, where Lobo/Vetor Zero earned the acclaimed Cristal for a Commissioned Film for Leica, Everything in Black and White, directed by Mateus de Paula Santos.
