Benioff, Weiss and Johnson Join the Rebellion Against ‘Star Wars’ Trilogies

David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Rian Johnson have left their respective projects, leaving no new ‘Star Wars’ films in active development.

We sense a great disturbance in the force, as if a franchise cried out in terror and has been silenced. David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, show runners of HBO’s megahit Game of Thrones, have officially walked from their writing positions on a new Star Wars trilogy slated for a Dec. 16, 2022 release. Benioff and Weiss, well known for working one project at a time, opted to focus on a $250 Netflix deal instead, stating, "There are only so many hours in the day, and we felt we could not do justice to both Star Wars and our Netflix projects. So we are regretfully stepping away.”

However, there is now word that the writers were removed from the project due to the abysmal ratings of the final Thrones season, which doesn’t take a high midichlorian count to understand. Perhaps the break may also be related to the pair’s strange admission at the Austin Film Festival that they had no idea what they were doing during Game of Thrones, have virtually no industry experience, and were surprised they got the job at all.

To make matters murkier than the swamps of Dagobah, Rian Johnson has reportedly also “moved along” from his own Star Wars trilogy, with Disney CEO Bob Iger confirming that no new movies are in active development. It sounds like Emperor Mouse is executing Order 66 on the entire franchise. We’ll just go back to watching the movies where Han Solo is still alive, thanks.
