Box Office: 'Star Trek' Opens to $84.1M

“Star Trek” sequel opens in the U.S. to $84.1 million for a worldwide tally of $164.6 million.

Paramount and Skydance Productions' Star Trek Into Darkness topped the box office chart with a four-day debut of $84.1 million, $13.5 million of which came from IMAX screenings. Overseas, the J.J. Abrams-directed tentpole feature took in an additional $40 million for an $80.5 million international total, bringing the worldwide total to $164.6 million.  

Into Darkness returns Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto in the roles of Captain James T. Kirk and Spock alongside Zoe Saldana, Anton Yelchin, Simon Pegg, John Cho, Karl Urban and villain Benedict Cumberbatch. The script was written by Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof.

In its third weekend out, Disney and Marvel Studios' Iron Man 3 came in second place at the domestic box office with $35.2 million. The film has now taken in $337.1 million in North America and $736.2 million internationally for a total $1.07 billion.

Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby, from Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures, came in third place with $23.4 million for a total of $90.2 million.

Paramount’s Pain and Gain, directed by Michael Bay, came in fourth over its fourth weekend out, bringing in $3.1 million for a total of $46.6 million.

Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros.' 42 placed fifth, grossing $2.7 million for a North American total of $88.7 million.

DreamWorks Animation’s The Croods came in sixth place, adding $2.8 million for a total of $176.8 million.

Lionsgate’s Tyler Perry Presents: Peeples, starring Craig Robinson and KerryWashington, came in seventh place with $2.2 million for a total of $7.9 million.

In eighth place, Universal’s Oblivion brought in $2.2 million for a total of $85.5 million.

Roadside Attractions’ Mud came in ninth place, taking in $2.15 million for a total of $11.6 million.

Rounding out the list at number 10, Lionsgate’s The Big Wedding brought in $1.1 million for a total of $20.2 million.
