Carbon Announces West Coast Office

New York-based visual effects and design studio Carbon announces the opening of its Los Angeles office.

New York-based visual effects and design studio Carbon announced the opening of its Los Angeles office helmed by Executive Producer Matt Thunell and Creative Director Chris Noellert.

Launched in 2009 by Creative Director Kieran Walsh and Executive Producer Frank Devlin in partnership with editorial powerhouse Whitehouse Post, Carbon is a full-service creative studio specializing in high-end visual effects, motion graphics, and design.

Recent work includes Google Chrome (BBH/NY); ESPN NBA spots with Kevin Durant and Paul Pierce directed by The Malloy’s for HSI; an American Express spot featuring renowned chef Thomas Keller (Ogilvy/New York); and the award-winning Lady Gaga and “It Gets Better” spots for Google. The newly launched LA office is currently working on multi-spot packages for Microsoft (Crispin Porter + Bogusky) and Ford (Team Detroit).

EP Matt Thunell will lead the creative studio with over a decade of experience at prominent studios and visual effects facilities on the West Coast. He joins the Carbon LA from Motion Theory/Mirada, where as Senior Producer he produced projects for directors and executives such as Mathew Cullen, Jon Favreau, Javier Jimenez, John Fragomeni, Jeff Scruton, and Grady Hall; and top agencies and clients including McGarryBowen, The Martin Agency, Energy BBDO, and Disney/Pixar.

CD Chris Noellert is a diverse visual effects artist with experience in both the US and European markets. Noellert joins Carbon LA from Motion Theory/Mirada, where he led projects like Grady Hall’s Target Summer campaign, Jon Favreau’s Wrigley 5 Gum, and most recently Mathew Cullen’s HP campaign, as Senior Flame Artist. Prior to that time, Noellert spent 12 years in Sweden helping to open and establish The Chimney Pot brand in Stockholm, Warsaw and Norway before eventually opening his own studio, Syndicate Ent, in 2000.

Thunell and Noellert are joined by Senior Flame Artist Pete Mayor, from Method. The new team will extend Carbon’s reach into photo-real CG work, including digital environments, FX animation, and automotive, with art direction and concept design. Carbon will take advantage of a high-speed pipeline between the NY and LA offices to facilitate larger projects and share work.

The Carbon LA studio is located at the Whitehouse Post office in Santa Monica, emphasizing the strategic alignment of the two companies. Over the past three years the companies have promoted a “One Roof” philosophy; collaborations between them have proven hugely successful. Clients, directors, editors, and artists alike enjoy the seamless coordination of commercial, music video, and feature film projects that entail previz, offline edit, color grading, online, design, motion graphics, visual effects, and finishing.
