The latest info for ‘Dracula: Book II – The Brides;’ ‘Aristotle: A Graphic Biography;’ ‘Frank Miller’s Ronin Rising’ and ‘Pandora (Book 1);’ and ‘The Toxic Avenger #1.’
Here’s a fast roundup of the latest news for four comics and graphic novels that just hit the shelves in bookstores and comic shops this week - “Aristotle: A Graphic Biography;” “Frank Miller’s Ronin Rising;” “Frank Miller’s Pandora (Book 1);” and “Toxic Avenger #1” - and “Dracula: Book II—The Brides,” that just launched on Kickstarter.
Dracula: Book II—The Brides
In 1897, Bram Stoker’s classic novel introduced one of the most famous literary character of all time—the terrifying vampire lord, Dracula. Now, comic-book creators Matt Wagner (“Grendel,” “Mage”) and Kelley Jones (“Batman: Red Rain,” “The Sandman”) have teamed to fill in the gaps in his backstory. After the success of their first volume “Dracula: Book I—The Impaler,” the creatives return to the story with “Dracula: Book II—The Brides,” which is now live on Kickstarter.
“One of the most eerie and memorable parts of the Dracula legend is the presence of his vampiric Brides,” said Wagner. “In both the novel and the litany of screen adaptations, the appearance of these beautiful and seductive sirens is always an indelible part of the narrative. And, of course, this presents us with yet another dark and beguiling story to be told. Who were these women before they became part of Dracula’s sinister harem? How and why did he come to claim them as his undead paramours? And what role do they ultimately play in his ongoing saga?”
“Dracula: Book II—The Brides” presents 120 pages of sexy and sinister story and art. José Villarrubia serves as colorist, with Rob Leigh on lettering.
Aristotle: A Graphic Biography
Abrams ComicArts, a division of ABRAMS, has just published “Aristotle: A Graphic Biography,” available now in bookstores and comic shops. Alecos Papadatos (“Logicomix”) and writer and educator Tassos Apostolidis follow a trail of clues to paint a picture of Aristotle and his philosophy in the 216-page hardcover graphic novel.
The son of a renowned Macedonian physician, Aristotle pursues his studies in Athens and becomes one of Plato’s favorite disciples. A great scholar, he even serves as Alexander the Great, Ptolemy, and Cassander’s personal tutor. For many, that would be the high point of their career, but Aristotle goes on to found his own school, the Lyceum. There, he transmits his knowledge and passion to any student wishing to embark on an intellectual and philosophical journey. The graphic novel has already been published in France, Belgium, Greece, Germany, Portugal, China, Turkey, and South Korea.
A cursed Ronin. Psychological manipulation by a sentient AI. A postapocalyptic biotech war in the demon-teeming pits of a twenty-first century New York. This is the world of “Frank Miller’s Ronin Rising,” the highly anticipated sequel to the influential cyberpunk comics classic. Miller Presents and Abrams ComicArts has published Ronin Rising in two stunning editions: a hardcover Collector’s Edition and a paperback manga edition from Kana, Abrams ComicArts’s new manga imprint.
Writer Frank Miller provides both the cover and two chapters of interior art. He is joined by artists Philip Tan and Daniel Henriques, who provide pencils and inks for chapters 1, 2, 3, and 5. The book includes Miller’s layouts, concept designs by Tan, six full-page wraparound variant covers, and a foreword by DC Comics Publisher Jim Lee. Now available in bookstores and comic shops.
Frank Miller’s Pandora (Book 1)
Annabeth is an endlessly curious 15-year-old girl. Unpopular at school, unhappy at home, and struggling to feel like she belongs, everything changes for her when she stumbles across a flower-shaped relic with the power to warp reality. Determined to change her dissatisfying everyday life, Annabeth uses her newfound powers to transform the world around her — and as she does, she sows the seeds of impending chaos in her wake.
Created by Frank Miller, the dark, modern-day fairy tale about a teenage girl searching for a perfect world is illustrated by Emma Kubert (Inkblot), co-written by Anthony Maranville and Chris Silvestri (Star Trek: Discovery), and features bonus material including endpapers and concept art by Emma Kubert; a behind-the-scenes look at the process of making “Frank Miller’s Pandora;” and six variant covers by Frank Miller, Andy Kubert, and Theresa Kubert. Now available in bookstores and comic shops.
Political cartoonist Matt Bors and artist Fred Harper (“Snelson”) have teamed for an all-new 5-issue comic book series, “The Toxic Avenger” from AHOY Comics. The satirical hero of the Troma Films cult classic has inspired five films, a cartoon, action figures, a musical, and a Marvel comic book series.
“’The Toxic Avenger’ delivers what Troma fans want,” said AHOY Comics Editor-in-Chief Tom Peyer. “The series has violent action, gross mutations, bursting pustules, eye-popping visuals, and trenchant humor.”
In “The Toxic Avenger,” teenager Melvin Junko helps run his parent's junkyard in Tromaville, a small town in New Jersey where nothing much ever happens — until an ill-timed train derailment of toxic waste transforms Melvin into a hideously deformed creature of superhuman size and strength: the Toxic Avenger!
“Toxic Avenger” #1 is now available in stores.
