Elton John’s Rocket Features acquires the film rights to Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, with plans to turn it into an animated feature.
Elton John’s Rocket Pictures production banner has acquired the film rights to Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat with plans to turn it into an animated feature.
According to a report by Variety, Rocket Pictures CEO Steve Hamilton Shaw and David Furnish will produce the film with the Really Useful Group. Webber, Rice and John will executive produce.
Created by Webber and Rice in 1968, the show has become one of the most-produced musicals of all time and has earned more than $600 million at the box office. It was presented in London’s West End in 1973 and opened in an expanded version in the U.S. in 1976, going on to play 747 performances on Broadway.
Rocket Pictures is currently producing Sherlock Gnomes, the sequel to its 3D animated hit Gnomeo & Juliet that earned $200 million worldwide.
