Lionsgate, Park Chan-wook to Develop English-Language ‘Oldboy’ Series

The show is based on the Japanese manga, which follows a man’s pulse-pounding journey for answers after he is kidnapped and held in a room for 15 years.

Park Chan-wook has teamed with Lionsgate Television to develop an English-language series adaptation of the 2003 film Oldboy, based on the Japanese manga of the same name, Variety reported.

“Lionsgate Television shares my creative vision for bringing Oldboy into the world of television,” said Park. “I look forward to working with a studio whose brand stands for bold, original and risk-taking storytelling.”

Oldboy follows a man’s journey for answers after he is kidnapped and held in a room for 15 years. Once released, he only has five days to figure out why he was imprisoned… or face the consequences.

“Park is one of the most visionary storytellers of our generation, and we’re excited to partner with him in bringing his cinematic masterpiece to the television screen,” said Scott Herbst, executive vice president and head of scripted development for Lionsgate Television. “This series adaptation of ‘Oldboy’ will feature the raw emotional power, iconic fight scenes and visceral style that made the film a classic.”

Park, who directed and co-wrote the original film, will produce the series with his partner Syd Lim. Courtney Mock and Tara Joshi will oversee for Lionsgate Television.
