Program sponsored by Film London and Arts Council England aims to support four black-identifying animators living in the UK by providing project development help, mentorship, and financing; applications deadline is June 22.
Film London and Arts Council England have announced FLAMIN Animations, a new program of commissions for four early-career black-identifying artist animators living in the UK. FLAMIN (Film London Artists’ Moving Image Network) aims to support artist animators who are embarking on their first steps in related careers. The program will provide development support and funding for new work. Applications are open now until June 22, 2021.
The program has been launched to address and acknowledge the underrepresentation of black-identifying artists within the art, film, and animation industries. Successful applicants will receive £2,500 to create a new animation, together with mentoring opportunities, development support, and advice. The four new 1–3-minute animation commissions created by selected artists will premiere on the Film London website in winter 2021 – this will provide further industry exposure to their work.
Film London will also provide a range of networking and mentoring opportunities to applicants not selected for FLAMIN commission – additional details will be announced in the coming months.
“We’re delighted to open up the call for applications and can’t wait to see what exciting works are produced through FLAMIN Animations,” commented Adrian Wootton, OBE, Chief Executive of Film London and the British Film Commission. “This program is a considered acknowledgement of the underrepresentation of black-identifying artists within the art, film, and animation industries. We hope that this program not only supports the selected artists, but also fosters a network for applicants who are unsuccessful in securing one of the commissions and opens up opportunities for peer group building, mentoring and talks by guest artist animators and more. As part of Film London’s response to the Black Lives Matter movement and our increased commitment to diversity and equality, we are committed to greater inclusivity in all our programs.”
