Portuguese Short A Suspeita Wins Cartoon d’Or

Taking place from September 20-24, 2000 in Visby, on the island of Gotland, Sweden, the 11th Cartoon Forum awarded its coveted Cartoon dOr prize to Portuguese director José Miguel Ribeiros A SUSPEITA (THE SUSPECT). An international jury comprised of Stefan Fjeldmark (Denmark), Jacques-Rémy Girerd (France) and Thilo Rothkirch (Germany) determined the award. Produced by Zeppelin Filmes in 1999, the detective film was made with puppets and has already won the Cinanima Festival 1999 (FNAC Trophy: best script; Cartoon Portugal Trophy: best Portuguese film; Press award) and Stuttgart Festival 2000 (Super RTL Trophy). Riberio was awarded a money prize to help finance his next picture. The other films up for the award were BZZ by Benoit Feroumont, Belgium; PONPON by Fabien Drouet, France; PASSPORT by Siri Melchior, U.K.; and THE MAN WITH THE BEAUTIFUL EYES by Jonathan Hodgson, U.K. Organized by Cartoon, with the support of the Union European's Media Programme, this edition of Cartoon Forum attracted 636 participants and drew record crowds to pitching sessions. The next Cartoon Forum will take place September 19 - 22 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, in Bavaria, Germany.
