Award-winning visual artist to oversee technical and creative development of the studio’s extensive virtual production facilities, resources, and solutions.
Atlanta, Georgia’s Trilith Studios has announced the appointment of Barry Williams as its first creative director of virtual production. Williams, a 20-year visual effects veteran whose credits include The Avengers and Star Trek Into Darkness, will lead the development and delivery of a set of innovative virtual production tools designed to give filmmakers nearly unlimited creative freedom – from dynamic LED walls and game-engine driven 360-degree environments, to real-time integration of physical and digital elements, characters and worlds.
One of the largest purpose-built movie studios in North America, Trilith Studios is set across 700 acres with more than one million square feet of production facilities, including 18 premium sound stages; construction workshops; costume shops; virtual production technologies; and an extensive 400-acre backlot. Trilith Studios is a one-stop-shop for producers with more than 40 production vendors onsite, including Technicolor, MBS Equipment Company, SGPS/ShowRig, Herc Rentals, and The Third Floor.
“We’re in a new era of filmmaking, when emerging technologies are promising to free filmmakers from the physical constraints of production and give them user-friendly ways to seamlessly translate their imaginations to the screen,” commented Trilith Studios president and CEO Frank Patterson. “Barry has a career at the forefront of virtual production technologies, and we are excited to have him now lead Trilith in making these innovative tools available to the greatest storytellers in the world.”
Williams served as a key creative for 15 years at Industrial Light & Magic, the visual effects company founded by George Lucas, where he supervised the production of visual effects and digital environments on over 20 feature films. Before joining Trilith, Williams led the development of innovative digital play-tainment spaces for the Atlanta-based start-up Kefi, where he served as the chief creative officer and creative director.
“I’m looking forward to leading Trilith in the next stage of our industry’s tech evolution,” shared Williams. “The Trilith team is motivated to take virtual production to new heights that far surpass what we’re seeing in the industry today. We’re eager to spearhead several first-to-market solutions that will enable visionaries to bring their art to life in new ways.”
