Gnomon Workshop Releases Creature DVDs

The Gnomon Workshop has released three DVDs by character modeler Laurent Pierlot of Blur Studios. In more than seven hours of lecture, Pierlot shares his myriad techniques for creating compelling life-like creatures. Using 3ds Max, BodyPaint, Photoshop and ZBrush, Pierlot discusses his workflow for modeling, detailing, texturing and rendering an alien creature based on a Carlos Huante design. While Max plays a key role in the development of the creature, virtually all the methods utilized apply to any leading 3D application such as Maya or XSI.

SCI FI Movies Slated in 2007; A.I. Assault is Latest Flick

SCI FI's Saturday night original movie franchise, promises more action, thrills, creatures, cataclysmic disasters and mythologically-based subject matter in 2007 with 28 new film projects slated for premiere, it was announced by Thomas P. Vitale, svp of programming & original movies, SCI FI.

But there many more to come in 2006, such as A.I. ASSAULT, the latest installment in the current season of SC IFI Movies. The Cinetel Films Inc. production premiered May 6, 2006, and encores on May 11 at 9:00 pm on the SCI FI Channel.

CBS Comforted by Aardman’s Creatures

CBS has ordered from Aardman Animations Ltd. an American version of the hit British television series CREATURE COMFORTS.

Based on the original Academy Award-winning short film created by Nick Park and Aardman, Aardman Animations will produce the half hour stop-motion animated series in Los Angeles and at its Bristol, England studios.

Eisner to Direct Creature From the Black Lagoon Remake

SAHARA-helmer Breck Eisner has been hired by Universal Pictures to remake CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON, reports THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. Gary Ross, whose father Arthur Ross was a writer on the 1954 original, is producing out of his Larger Than Life production shingle. Gary Ross wrote the current version of the screenplay and Tedi Safarian wrote a previous draft.

Creature Comforts Series Bows on DVD

Aardman Animations other great franchise, CREATURE COMFORTS, makes its way to DVD Sept. 27, 2005, by way of THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON (Sony Pictures Home Ent., $19.94). Spawned by the 1990 Oscar-winning stop-motion short, Nick Park continued his ingenious mockumentary format with 13 TV episodes in 2003. New to DVD, the COMPLETE FIRST SEASON expands the animals witty and philosophical perspectives beyond the local zoo (culled from interviews with ordinary British folk). Co-directed by Richard Goleszowski.

Henson’s Creature Shop Closes in London

As a result of the dollars unfavorable exchange rate and a lack of concrete tax incentives in the U.K. production market, The Jim Henson Co. will no longer have a full time staff at its London location of Jim Hensons Creature Shop, the companys visual effects and animatronics division. However, the companys own television and film projects are not affected and the Creature Shop will continue to service third party clients out of its Los Angeles and New York locations, as well as hiring freelance crews in London on a project-by-project basis.

The Gnomon Workshop, in conjunction with Design Studio Press, introduced two new DVDs from returning artist Harald Belker, whose titles cover car and prop design for films and games. In addition, Nick Pugh joins the library this month, offering three noteworthy DVDs on design originality, creature design and environment rendering.

Encore Hollywood Adds New FX To Alien 3 DVD

Encore Hollywood provided animation and visual effects services for Fox Home Entertainment on ALIEN 3 for the Alien Quadrilogy, the nine disc boxed set, which arrives on December 2. Computer animator Greg Tsadilas created a 3D version of a baby alien for the birth sequence, which is part of 30 minutes of added material. The birth sequence shows the newborn alien creature emerging from the carcass of an ox then fleeing down a corridor. The new creature is in a form not seen in any of the ALIEN films.

Luma Transforms Underworld of Vampires and Werewolves

Luma Pictures helped to conjure up a dark and formidable world of werewolves and vampires in providing visual effects services for Lakeshore Entertainment's new horror thriller UNDERWORLD (opening Sept. 19, 2003). A team of some 20 artists from the studio took part in the project, crafting visuals ranging from 3D matte paintings of central Budapest, to the partial transformation of a man into a werewolf, to the creation of microorganisms representing creature transformations on a cellular level.

Aardman Revives Creature Comforts

Viewers just can't get enough of the Brazilian lion, the polar bear twins and the other zoo inhabitants that were the subject of Nick Park's Oscar-winning short CREATURE COMFORTS. Park and Aardman Animation are in production on a new series featuring the animated animals that is scheduled to air on U.K. channel ITV1 in 2003. Old favorites from the original short, as well as nearly 100 new characters, will appear in the new CREATURE COMFORTS series. Creator Nick Park said, "I have had this project in mind for a few years now.
