Adobe Character Animator Receives Emmy Award for Breaking New Ground in TV Animation

National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences honors pioneering software system used for live performance-based animation.

The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has announced that it will be honoring Adobe Character Animator with an Emmy Award for breaking new ground in television animation as a pioneering system for live performance-based animation using facial recognition, and for showing excellence in engineering creativity. Adobe previously received two technical Academy Awards in 2019 for Photoshop and After Effects.

Character Animator began six years ago as a research project; powered by Adobe Sensei’s technology, the software complements traditional tools by empowering storytellers to bring artwork to life, in high-quality recorded and live animations, faster and with new levels of flexibility.

Some of the pioneers using Character Animator include The Simpsons’ creative team, who took a chance as the first to use it in live TV broadcasts. Tim Luecke and the team at Showtime’s Our Cartoon President utilized it for their entire production.

What used to be a manual process of keyframed illustrations is now performance-based storytelling that can be recorded, or even live-streamed, in real-time. With improved efficiency and creative control, Adobe Character Animator is making transformative strides in the art of animation.
