In the wake of the Colorado shootings, "The Dark Knight Rises" took in $160.9 million in its opening weekend at the domestic box office, the best debut ever for a 2D movie, and the third best debut of all time.

In the wake of the Colorado shootings, The Dark Knight Rises took in $160.9 million in its opening weekend at the domestic box office, the best debut ever for a 2D movie, and the third best debut of all time.

With industry projections going as high as $195 million prior to the film’s opening, Friday's massacre at a midnight cineplex screening of the film in Aurora, Colorado, in which 12 were killed and 58 injured, clearly dampened moviegoers' enthusiasm.

Box office numbers, normally sent out by studios on Sunday morning, were released on Monday at 2:00pm after Warner Bros., rival studios and box office data firm Rentrak decided Friday to delay the report “out of respect for the victims and their families.”

Overseas, Dark Knight Rises brought in $88 million as it opened in 17 markets for a worldwide total of nearly $249 million.

In the number two spot, Ice Age: Continental Drift, the fourth installment in Fox’s prehistoric animated series, brought in $20.4 million on its second weekend out for a domestic total of $88.8 million. Overseas, the film made $58.8 million this weekend for a worldwide total of $442.7 million.

At number three, Sony’s Amazing Spider-Man made $10.9 million on its third weekend out for a total of $228.6 million at the domestic box office.

Seth MacFarlane’s raunchy comedy Ted came in fourth on its fourth weekend out, bringing in $10 million for a total of $180.4 million.

Disney and Pixar’s Brave came in fifth place, earning $6 million for a domestic total of $208.8 million.

Warner Bros.’ Magic Mike came in sixth place, making $4.3 million for a total of $101.7 million.

In seventh place, Oliver Stone's drug drama Savages brought in $3.4 million for a total of $40 million.

Tyler Perry's Madea's Witness Protection came in at number eight, earning $2.2 million for a total of $60.3 million in its four weeks at the domestic box office.

Focus Features’ Moonrise Kingdom held on to ninth place, earning $1.8 million for a total of $36.1 million.

Rounding out the list at number 10, Woody Allen’s To Rome with Love brought in $1.4 million for a domestic total of $11.1 million.
