Sony’s ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ Wins Golden Globe Award

Widely praised for its groundbreaking visual style, Sony Pictures Animation’s ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ continues its awards season momentum with Golden Globe win.

Sony Pictures Animation’s ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ wins 2019 Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Motion Picture.

Kicking off awards season in earnest, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s 76th Golden Globe Awards took place Sunday night with the statuette for Best Animated Motion Picture going to Sony’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Directed by Peter Ramsey, Robert Persichetti Jr. and Rodney Rothman, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse topped four other animated features for the award, including Pixar’s Incredibles 2, directed by Brad Bird; Wes Anderson’s Isle of Dogs; Mamoru Hosoda’s Mirai; and Disney’s Ralph Breaks the Internet, directed by Phil Johnston and Rich Moore.

“Anyone can wear the mask; everyone is powerful and everyone is necessary, and that is the spirit of the movie,” Ramsey said backstage at the Golden Globes. “We all felt deeply that anyone can have this kind of experience and be this kind of hero. The story of Miles Morales was a way to crystallize all of those feelings into one character.”

“Our favorite part was finding a voice for Miles Morales, with Shameik Moore, and creating something that could stand up to Peter Parker and be unique and different and separate,” Persichetti added.

Since opening last month, Sony Pictures Animation’s Spider-Verse, created by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, has been widely praised both for its fresh story and visual style. The film has received seven nominations for this year’s Annie Awards, including for Best Animated Feature and Outstanding Achievement for Directing as well as Character Design, Character Animation, Production Design, Writing, and Editorial, and has been named best animated feature by a number of Critics’ Associations, including in Los Angeles and New York. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was also recently nominated for a PGA Award for Outstanding Producer of Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures.
