Unreal Engine 5.3 Helping to Unlock M&E Production Potential

Latest release’s new and enhanced features in the virtual production toolset, nDisplay support for SMPTE ST 2110, and VCam are boosting the game engine's adoption across entertainment content production pipelines.

Since the release of Unreal Engine 5.3 in September, Epic has noted an increase in integration of the Unreal Engine across production pipelines. Specifically, new advancements in the virtual production toolset are helping prepare for the next generation of ICVFX (in-camera visual effects) stages.

In a recent blog post, the company outlines new developments promoting Unreal Engine’s adoption across the M&E space, including:

  • nDisplay support for SMPTE ST 2110 - Developed by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE), this new standard enables video transport over IP.
  • Virtual Camera (VCam) enhancements range from direct review on iPads for faster iteration to simultaneously stream different VCam output for various team members.
  • Cine Cam Rig Rail -Integrated with VCam and in-editor workflow, the new Cine Cam Rig Rail lets filmmakers emulate the workflow and results of traditional camera movement along tracks or dollies.
  • Unreal Stage iOS app (released after UE5.2) mirrors the dedicated In-Camera VFX Editor introduced in UE 5.1 but with a UI tailored for a touch interface.
