Millennium Actress Opens In Limited Run

MILLENNIUM ACTRESS, the first film to be released under Go Fish Pictures, DreamWorks new distribution arm, opened Sept. 12, 2003 in a limited run. The Japanese production by MAD HOUSE (PERFECT BLUE, VAMPIRE HUNTER D and METROPOLIS) reunites director Satoshi Kon and screenwriter Sadayuki Murai, who first collaborated together on Kons award-winning debut feature PERFECT BLUE. Taro Maki (TENCHI FOREVER) served as the exec producer. Susumu Hirasawa composed the score, and Takeshi Honda was the editor and director of animation.

The Horror of Undead Unleashed at AEAF 2003

Brisbane filmmakers Peter and Michael Spierig will join a stellar international lineup of international speakers at the Australian Effects and Animation Festival (AEAF) being held at the Sydney Convention Center, Darling Harbor from Dec. 7-10, 2003. Their homegrown horror movie, UNDEAD, is due for release in Australian cinemas on Sept. 4 and destined for global release in 2004.

Self-financed and costing fewer than one million dollars to produce, UNDEAD has already garnered prizes and praise at the Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne Film Festivals.

Kulkarni Elected to International Television Academy Board

JadooWorks Animation Studios coo Ashish Kulkarni has been elected to the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences as an associate member. He was elected by a majority vote from the full board of directors of the Television Academy to serve a two-year term. In his role representing animation, he will help to organize Academy activities, such as judgings and panels, and will participate in the various sub-committees.

Annecy International Film Festival

The 27th International Animated Film Festival at Annecy is now accepting entries for animated short films, television series, commissioned films and student films. Entry forms are now available on the festival Website. Only works completed after September 2001 and never before entered to the Annecy Festival will be considered. No registration fee is required. The Annecy International Festival of Animation features screenings, retrospectives, seminars, tributes and an international film competition. The MIFA expo held in conjunction with Annecy is the international market for animated film.

Last Call for Entries In Barcelona International TV Festival

The Barcelona International Television Festival 2003 (Childrens Television Festival) has extended its deadline to June 20, 2003. The Barcelona International Television Festival is devoted to childrens television programs with awards for both national and international productions that showcase ethical and humanitarian values. The festival is seeking live-action and animated shorts, 60 minutes in length or less. Works must have been completed after January 1, 1999. Non-selected works will still be presented during the Festival in the Video A La Carte section. Other sections include: The Other Childhood, dedicated to programs that picture the human condition of children in developing nations; and Surprises, featuring the production of thematic channels, broadcasters, producers and festivals who work in the area of childrens television. DIC Entertainment recently inked deals with leading networks for international distribution for shows including SUPER DUPER SUMOS, MADELINE, MARY-KATE AND ASHLEY: IN ACTION and SHERLOCK HOLMES IN THE 22ND CENTURY. "MIP-TV was a success for us, even considering the state of the world at the time," said Pat Ryan, evp of international sales.

Disney TV Turning Japanese

Twenty years after the first international Disney theme park opened in Tokyo and the Disney Channel debuted in the U.S., Disney will launch the Disney Channel Japan on cable and satellite in winter 2003/2004. Satellite platform Sky PerfecTV will offer the 24-hour channel as an á la carte option in winter 2003/4, with the channel also going into basic tier on Japanese cable networks around the same time.

The 1st Annual Shanghai International Cartoon Carnival is an animation and comics festival targeted at children and teenagers. The focus of the Carnival is screenings of animation, interactive games, fan-based activities (COSPLAY, fan-art), and live games. Emphasis is placed solely on the enjoyment of the attendees (viz., children). As this is the first year of the event, there will be no competition or entry fees. All major formats, including animation with linked live performances, are acceptable for submission.

Independent animation studio Mike Young Productions (MYP) is expanding with key hires in areas of development and distribution. Regis Brown joins as VP of international sales, responsible for launching a new distribution arm for the company. His sales slate includes HE-MAN AND THE MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE in key international territories, JAKERS! THE ADVENTURES OF PIGGLEY WINKS, a co-production with PBS WLIW and Entara Ltd., and PET ALIEN, a co-production with Antefilms Production, for TF1.

Entertainment Rights Appoints New Sales Executive For The Asian Market

Children's entertainment group Entertainment Rights has expanded its sales team and appointed Matthew Ashcroft as sales executive responsible for developing business in the key markets of Japan, Korea, Taiwan, China, India, Australia and New Zealand. Ashcroft's most recent position was sales executive for Fireworks International, the international distribution arm of Canadian based Fireworks Entertainment, where he was responsible for pay and free TV sales to Asia and Latin America.

Former vice president of Greenlight International B.V., Lynn Chadwick has been appointed Nelvanas director of sales for Northern Europe. Based in the companys London office, she will drive sales and development with key customers in the United Kingdom, Ireland and the Netherlands. Prior to her position at Greenlight, Chadwick served as vice president, international at Salter Street Films International. She oversaw the establishment and significant growth of their international division, establishing Salter Street as a leading Canadian producer and supplier of television content.

4Kids Expands; Promotes New Execs

London-based 4Kids Entertainment International has completed an expansion of its operations that encompasses the promotion of key management and the appointments of new executives. Promoted to the position of commercial director is Helen Howells, who will focus on the company's sub-agent relationships as well as oversee its marketing and creative areas. Howells assumes her new position with 4Kids Entertainment International after serving as director of international licensing. She joined the company in 2000.
