THQ Inc. is expanding international operations with two new strategic appointments: Ian Curran, previously md of THQ UK, to the newly created position of vp, European Publishing and Martin Good as vp of Asia-Pacific Publishing.
Curran will oversee the company's expanding European operations including offices in England, Germany and France. Since joining THQ in late 2000, Curran has played a key role in growing the company's international revenues to more than 25% of its global sales.

"International Federation of Journalists" and "Cartoonists Rights Network East Europe" is presenting an international exhibition dedicated to Ion Luca Caragiale, an East European writer, humorist, dramatist, caricaturist and journalist, killed in 1912 because of his features. All great caricaturists from the world were invited to submit their work. Ten gold prizes of $1,000 will be awarded and winners along with 15 other cartoonists will be invited to participate at exhibition's open.
On November 24, 2003 in New York City, the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced the winners of the 31st Annual International Emmy Awards. The BBC was the big winner of the night taking home three awards, including the Children & Young People Award for the newest Robbie the Reindeer adventure, LEGEND OF THE LOST TRIBE. The project was co-production between BBC Bristol and Comic Relief.

The FAN International Animation Festival features a competition along with screenings, retrospectives, exhibitions, workshops and parties. Highlights include an exclusive Russian Focus, showcasing the best new talent for the country, and a exhibit of the best student work from the Norwich School of Art and Design. Any animated film between 60 seconds and 30 minutes long produced after December 31, 2000 can be submitted. The international prize jury line up includes Eduard Nazarov (Russia), Ruth Lingford (U.K.), Don Herzfeldt (U.S.A.) and Priit Tender (Estonia).
Although Christopher Grace recently stepped own as the champion of animation at Welsh broadcaster S4C, its distribution arm still is very much in the animation game as S4C International presented two children's animation pilots at MIPCOM. TIFF was created by Siriol and KIRK was created by Cart_n Cymru. Grace, co-founder of S4C, will help produce the two shows. S4C hopes to strike co-production deals for both projects.

MTV Networks International (MTVNI) announced at MIPCOM that it would handle the international distribution and licensing for Comedy Central and Spike TV properties. Both Comedy Central and Spike TV are wholly owned by MTV Networks. Comedy Central airs animated programs SOUTH PARK and KID NOTORIOUS and Spike TV airs THE REN & STIMPY ADULT PARTY CARTOON, GARY THE RAT and STRIPPERELLA.
Carmine Russo has been promoted to svp of International Sales JAKKS Pacific Inc., a leading multi-brand company that designs and markets a broad range of toys and leisure products.
Russo, formerly coo of Toymax International Inc., joined JAKKS Pacific as svp of research and development, following the acquisition of Toymax by JAKKS in 2002. At JAKKS, Russo has worked to integrate Toymax's toy and seasonal lines into JAKKS' operations. In addition, Russo has been actively working to expand JAKKS' TV games line and to develop JAKKS' NASCAR-branded radio control vehicles.

With growing numbers of buyers, sellers and programs, MIPCOM Jr 2003s screenings (October 8 9) broke all viewing records since the shows launch in 1996. A total of 13,815 individual screenings were carried out by program buyers, a 15% increase compared with 12,052 last year. Previously, the highest number of screenings took place at MIPCOM Jr 2000 with 12,572 viewings.
The 2003 Icograda World Congress brings together more than 1,400 designers and students from more than 40 countries to discuss identity, entertainment, sustainability intellectual property and education in the design industry. The conference will contain exhibitions, social events and visits to Japanese companies. For students, the conference will include an International Student Poster Competition and an International New Designers Workshop. The three events include the Trade Development Council's (TDC) trade expo -- Hong Kong International Film and TV Market (Filmart), the Government's Hong Kong International Film Festival and the Hong Kong Film Awards organized by the industry.
ShowEast, the conference for movie theater owners and operators, wrapped up its 19th year in Orlando on October 2, 2003. The big news for the animation community was the premiere of Disneys next 2D animated feature BROTHER BEAR, which hits theaters on November 1, 2003. As well, Warner Bros. started its major push to promote its upcoming LOONEY TUNES: BACK IN ACTION, which arrives on November 14.
