Norman McLaren Restored! November 29-30, 2006 A set of new 35mm prints featuring the pioneering works of master animator Norman McLaren (b. Scotland, 1914-1987) has been arranged by the National Film Board in Canada, where the artist spent his forty-year career. This eleven-film program, presented on the occasion of a new DVD set of McLaren's complete works, emphasizes the imagination, vitality, and astonishing versatility of the artist's animation.

As that adorable feminine feline, Hello Kitty turns 30 on Nov. 1, 2004, ADV Films releases HELLO KITTY & FRIENDS: HOLIDAY FUN, a deluxe two-disc set collection features 10 episodes from the TV series plus two bonus mini-episodes and three all-new special episodes. The collection hits the streets November 2.

STAR WARS fans may get an animated fix as Cartoon Network starts airing in the U.S. STAR WARS: CLONE WARS, an epic micro-series consisting of 20 animated, three-minute shorts, beginning Nov. 7, 2003 at 8:00 pm.

AFM Moves to Fall with AFI Film Fest

AFMA announced June 16, 2003 that it will shift its annual Santa Monica, California-based American Film Market from February to November beginning in 2004. The last winter AFM will be held on February 25 to March 3, 2004. The first fall AFM will be held November 3-10, 2004, meaning indie players and business will need to make plans to attend the AFM twice in 2004. This removes the AFM from the busy awards season as well as the nearby Sundance and Berlin fests.

Disney, DreamWorks Fight Over 2004 Release Date

They're at it again. Disney announced yesterday that it's releasing the next Pixar film, Brad Bird's THE INCREDIBLES, on November 5, 2004, the same date that DreamWorks had already positioned for the launch of SHARKSLAYER, its very own computer-animated underwater answer to Pixar's FINDING NEMO. So rather than going head-to-head, DreamWorks has decided to find another slot, though the family film traffic is already heavy in November, with POLAR EXPRESS, the CGI reteaming of Tom Hanks and Robert Zemeckis, bowing on November 19 along with the first SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS theatrical feature.

The 4th Angoulême International Technologies Forum/Cartoon Master, will kick off on Thursday, November 14, 2002, with a session on 3D character animation from Isaac Kerlow, Disney's Digital Production Director. The Forum will continue through November 16 and host representatives from major U.S. and European studios who will update participants on technological breakthroughs, which are changing the present field of animation production, especially in the field of feature films.

RESFEST Continues Its World Tour

After successful screenings in San Francisco and New York, the 6th Annual RESFEST will come to Hollywood's Egyptian Theater October 30-November 3, 2002. Showcasing innovative digital films, music videos and animation, the directors of RESFEST created seven thematic shorts programs from over 1,500 submissions. Notable animation screenings include Robert Bradbrook's Cartoon d'Or winning film HOME ROAD MOVIES and the U.S. premiere of Phil Mulloy's THE INVASION.

Icebox Halves Staff, Gets Sued & Sells Toon To Fox

In a restructuring move, Icebox.com has cut its staff of 100 in half. The decision was made in an attempt to make the company profitable by the end of next year. Icebox will no longer produce its content in-house, but will use freelancers some being the laid off employees -- and Flash animation production firms. Company CEO Steve Stanford reassured the industry that Icebox has US$2 million on hand, but needed to convince investors that the company is close to profitability. Stanford said that a new round of about $10 million in financing should close next month.

Gnomon School of Visual Effects One-Day Maya Workshops

Gnomon School of Visual Effects is conducting three-weeks of one-day Maya workshops. Thirteen of the workshops cover capabilities in Alias|Wavefront's Maya, with the remaining two addressing 3D paint programs, StudioPaint3D and Deep Paint 3D. All of the courses will be held from 9 am to 4 pm. Each class will cost US$295.
